Lapland with Kids - A Family-Friendly Destination?

A Holiday in the Far North – A Big Adventure for the Little Ones

When people think of Lapland, most imagine snow, northern lights, and endless wilderness. But is it really a destination for families with children? And what about in summer? We often get asked this question – and our answer is crystal clear: yes, Lapland is absolutely family-friendly!

We (Daniel & Sandra) live here in Vitberget, Swedish Lapland, together with our dogs – and we’ve already welcomed many families with children. Our youngest guest was just 2 years old. Let us show you why a holiday with us is perfect for little and big explorers alike – both in winter and in summer.

Winter Wonderland for Children

Picture this: snow crunching under your boots, wrapped up warmly in a sled while our Alaskan Malamutes pull you through a sparkling, snowy landscape. For many children, that’s a dream come true – and we make sure it turns into a lasting, happy memory.

Our dogs are incredibly child-friendly, calm, and patient – whether the kids are 2 or 12 years old. They are used to working with little humans and are especially careful. And if someone feels a bit shy or hesitant, we’re always right there. Step by step, we help build trust – with plenty of warmth, time, and patience.

For the youngest adventurers, we choose mild winter days and family-friendly, sheltered trails. With the right clothing (we’ll gladly advise you!), nothing stands in the way of the adventure.

But husky sledding is just the beginning – winter in Lapland has so much more to offer:

  • Tracking in the snow – fur, paw prints, and animal tracks in the fresh snow

  • Building snow forts, sledding, or snowshoe walks

  • Ski resort Kåbdalis (only 20 minutes away): free activities for kids, like riding in a snowcat

  • Excursions to Jokkmokk (with its fascinating Sami museum) or Luleå, where you can even see icebreakers

  • Storforsen Nature Reserve with its impressive rapids – accessible even in winter

Summer Adventures for Young Explorers

Lapland in summer is just as magical – a real paradise for families. Right outside our holiday home, the adventure begins: wander into the forest, search for tracks, watch birds, or pick berries together. Nature is the best playground – and here, it’s right at your doorstep.

We love going on “track hunts” with children – even in summer, you’ll find animal hair, feathers, or footprints in the soft forest floor. Kids are usually thrilled!

Other summer highlights include:

  • Berry picking (like cloudberries or blueberries) during a walk

  • Family-friendly hikes and bike tours

  • Swimming in crystal-clear lakes

  • Short husky tours are also possible in summer

  • Cultural excursions, e.g. to the Sami museum or the harbor city of Luleå

  • Exploring nature reserves – such as Storforsen, Vindelfjällen, or the Kungsleden trail (well-marked, even for kids)

Everyday Life & Infrastructure

Of course, parents also want to know about supplies and infrastructure – and rightly so. The nearest supermarket is just 20 minutes away by car. In Älvsbyn (about 45 minutes), you’ll find a wider range of shops, pharmacies, and more.

You’ll stay in our cozy holiday home, fully equipped for a relaxed family vacation – with a fireplace, a well-stocked kitchen, board games, and plenty of space to simply enjoy time together.

Our Conclusion

Lapland is not your typical family destination. But that’s exactly what makes it so special. Here, you and your children will experience real nature, real animals – and real closeness as a family. No stress, no noise, no endless screen time. Instead, you’ll share countless warm moments in the cold snow – or wander barefoot through the summer forest.
